A development that takes its cues from a sunken 19th century navy ship is making a splash in bayside Melbourne.
Lumiere in Black Rock has been designed to evoke the HMVS Cerberus wreck in nearby Half Moon Bay.
From a curving facade and front fence to gunmetal tapware and island benchtops that mimic the ship’s curved structure, the boutique development of six apartments has been designed as a subtle homage to the local landmark.
Lowe Living director Tim Lowe said architects Warren and Mahoney had gone into the design with their eyes open to all the local area had to offer.
“They’ve looked at the textured face on the cliffs that protect Cerberus and the sandy roughness, so the development links back to the coastline too,” Mr Lowe said.
The curving front fence and wavelike aspects in the facade are also a nod to the gentle waters of Black Rock Beach a short walk away.
Engineered oak floors, Miele appliances, including an integrated fridge, and marble splashbacks provide the luxury touches sought by downsizers in the area. And the
100-152sq m floorplans provide the dimensions needed to accommodate locals who have typically enjoyed spacious homes and blocks.
Jack Merlo-designed gardens will span up to 181sq m with a mix of hanging and climbing greenery.
Lumiere is a short stroll from Black Rock village and local beaches. Royal Melbourne Golf Course is also nearby, while Southland shopping centre provides a mix of dining, shopping and transport options.
Even before a planned launch on Monday, two of the six apartments have already sold.
In a further nod, the development was approved within the space of four months — both council and local residents appreciating the design and boutique size of the project.
Two-bedroom apartments are priced at $1.195 million, while three-bedroom residences are $1.695 million to $1.995 million.
