A rural retreat on the Sunshine Coast, a renovation delight in North Queensland, an affordable house in Brisbane and the state capital’s first five-star hotel in two decades have been awarded top gongs.

Fifty-eight winners from across Queensland were announced at the Master Builders Queensland Housing and Construction Awards last night.

Sunshine Coast-based Braeden Constructions took out the House of the Year category for their project, Cooroy Mountain Residence.

Sunshine Coast-based Braeden Constructions took out the House of the Year category

The builder also took top spot in the Individual Home over $2 million and Best Residential Bathroom categories.

With Mount Cooroy as a backdrop and Mount Tinbeerwah to the north, this stunning residence was designed to appear like it was floating in the Noosa hinterland landscape thanks to its suspended slab that cantilevers the blockwork walls by three metres.

The judges noted that the way the Cooroy Mountain Residence interacts with the environment was “surprising”, with its use of rendered walls and feature brickwork, timber floors, cabinetry and stone benches.

“The welcoming entry area includes a central fish pond that can be opened right up as well as provide a calming rural view between the bedrooms and the main living,” the judges said.

“The bathrooms are stunning, offering forever views from the stand-alone tubs and spacious showers.

“The main bathroom features a steam room while a mitre jointed stone slab serves as a central wall of the shower.

“The surrounds include an ionised pool and floodlit tennis court as well as dam with cabana and deck.

“The finished product must bring the builder immense satisfaction to see it as such a beautifully functioning home.”

At the other end of the price scale was Mika 35, an affordable house design by Brighton Homes.

It won two categories – the President’s Award and Display Home $251,000 – $350,000.

“The home exudes expensive and luxury but it’s a budget home,” the judges said.

Brisbane-based Zephyr Industries won their category for the renovation of Belvedere at 15 Towers St in Ascot, and Sunshine Coast-based Grant Mconald Homes won the People’s Choice award.

Project of the Year was won by Multiplex Constructions for the W Hotel and Brisbane Quarter.

“There were many outstanding projects in this category but this had the wow factor and we couldn’t fault it, it really blew you away in design and in quality of build,” the judges said.

“In addition to all the technical building elements, site access on this inner-city site would have been a challenge.

“The tourism and leisure facilities are second to none.”

Master Builders’ CEO, Grant Galvin said the winners across the 58 categories had help shape many Queensland towns and communities.

“From exquisite hotels, extensive shopping centres, leisure facilities to luxurious residences, contemporary designs and affordable luxury … they are a true recognition of what our industry can do,” Mr Galvin said.
