FROM beach shack to luxury living, 10 Talpa Cl has a tale to tell.
Maree Ploetz and Cosimo Di Maggio bought a two-bedroom, one-bathroom, 1980s brick home 10 years ago.
It may not have exuded the style of what currently sits on the site, but within five minutes walk of Palm Coves restaurants, cafes and bars, the pair fell in love with the block immediately.

“What we liked about it is it’s very secluded, the block backs onto a rainforest gully which we didn’t know about until we started the renovation,” Ms Ploetz said.
“The idea was it was very connected to nature, you can hear the ocean, the seasonal creek, you cansee the mountains. The design picked up on those natural elements and bushland setting.
“Surprisingly, my favourite place is one of the smallest little nooks, the breakfast deck, which faces out into the forest. From there we sit and have breakfast and look at the birds in the morning.

The shower

“There are so many different zones — another favourite zone would be the shower area and the big oval window looking out onto the forest. Sometimes you’re showering and a wallaby jumps by and it feels as if you’re showering in the forest.”
Tony Lawson won the Building Designers Association of Queensland’s 2017 Regional Design Award in renovations for the home which he excavated underneath to create another level.
Ms Ploetz said the unique decision meant she kept the original house and remained connected to both levels.
“Downstairs is an entertaining space, it is a very cool space,” she said.
“When we lifted up the tiles, they were horrible tiles but now the polished concrete floor looks spectacular and we did the walls with the colour in the render.

Cool, sunken living space

“We tried to use a lot of local materials for elements — around the garden are gabion retaining walls filled with Herberton pink granite and we have used ironbark hardwood throughout the house and in the upper flooring.
“The marble in the bathroom and in the kitchen bench is from a local Cairns supplier who gets the stone from quarries in the Pilbara area.”
The couple said new life circumstances meant they were selling their pride and joy.
“I love Cairns and our quality of life in that house improved enormously,” Ms Ploetz said.
“You could be in the house with a monsoon downpour and all the doors completely open — it just made living in the tropics easy.”
Reed Realty principal Darren Reed said the cul-de-sac was on an impressive 1218sq m block and offered plenty of privacy.

Open kitchen and deck

There are three bedrooms on the ground level including a bespoke master suite with stunning ensuite, walk-in rob and access to a private deck.
The second level extension incorporates elegant curved ceilings, a gourmet kitchen with marble benchtops and second living or dining space, all leading out through full height glass sliders to the wraparound deck overlooking the rainforest and seasonal creek which borders the rear of the property.
“The pool area is private and secure, and the entertaining ‘grotto’ under the house offers a cool escape from the heat of the day,” Mr Reed said.
“There is ample undercover and off street parking for several vehicles and generous storage throughout.
“If required, there is copious flat usable land to further develop the property with the addition of a guest pavilion for example.
“This is a totally unique property offering — the location, individual design and build, and the lifestyle benefits these things deliver are one in a million.”
