An Altona man who built a world-class recording studio in his attic has proven it really is a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll.

Mark Robins’ one-of-a-kind roofspace at 47 Romawi St has hosted a guest list including Black Eyed Peas guitarist George Pajon, Killing Heidi drummer Adam Pedretti and the Baby Animals’ David Leslie.

Six years after forming his own band, Cicadastone, and now in his mid-40s, he’s finally on the cusp of his teenage dream to go from rocking the suburbs to rock star after an international music label recently signed the band.

“It’s only taken my whole life,” Mr Robins said.

“When we were teenagers we dreamt about this sort of stuff happening, now it is.”

For the past two years he’s had a standing gig upstairs in his own house, “making some noise” with bandmates Jarrod Medwin, Tommy Sunset, and his brother Mat, before recording tracks for their second album at his brothers’ nearby recording studio Colour Sound.

But after seven years renovating — and three years painstakingly building the studio from recycled materials when he had time after work — Mr Robins and wife Lisa McCormick are selling their unique five-bedroom family home via Sweeney Altona’s Julie Burt.

Recycled sound proofing from Atlantic studio, a vintage Neve console and about $10,000 worth of cables have gone into transforming the 120sq m empty shell into a “world-class” recording studio.

“I got some of the materials for a bottle of bourbon,” Mr Robins said.

“It took me about three years working a few hours a night whenever I could do it.

“I doubt there’d be anything like this in the country — most people’s home studios are quite small and budget, this is like having a world-class studio.”

Ms McCormick said while their family, including kids Ashley, 17, Luke, 14, and Jaymi, 12, had loved their time at the home, they were selling so they could tackle a new project.

“It was perfect for the kids, they have gone to school three streets away and Altona has a great lifestyle with the beach,” Ms McCormick said.

“But we’re hoping to do it all again with a fixer-upper.”

The house also comes with a pool and enough space in its open-plan living zone to host a modest gig.
