Jack Cuneo didn’t tell his family he planned to buy 246 Morrison Rd, Putney.
His daughter Leisa Cuneo found out when he phoned her with the news in 2001.
“He called up and said, ‘I bought a house’. Everybody was dismayed,” Ms Cuneo said.
Mr Cuneo’s new house was up the road from a similar California bungalow at 234 Morrison Rd, where he was born and grew up.
And it was a 10-minute walk to the house he built for his wife, Jan, and two daughters, Sue and Leisa, in Pellisier Rd in the late 1950s.

A carpenter by trade, Mr Cuneo was a “salt of the earth” sort of bloke who never minced
words and lived a quiet life.
Every day, he walked across the road to the newsagency to buy a paper, Ms Cuneo said.
“Dad would sit in the garage, lean on his 4WD and read. Anyone walking by would see him.”
Mr Cuneo’s house is in immaculate condition.
The 1920s bungalow with a modern extension is on 663sqm across the road from Putney village and around the corner from Putney Public School.

A modern extension with a vaulted ceiling opens the house up to a big backyard.

The front rooms have beautiful patterned period ceilings — favourites of Ms Cuneo.
The rear has a modern open extension with a neat functional kitchen, vaulted ceiling and arched timber framed windows and doors.
Although Morrison Rd can get busy during peak hour, the solid double brick construction cancels out traffic noise.
Mr Cuneo lived in his house until several months before his death in 2017, aged 88.
In a short biography penned about her father’s connection to the suburb, Ms Cuneo wrote: “This house was built in the same era as his father’s house, it has the same front veranda to watch the world go by and the same ornate ceilings.

“Back to where he started. Three stages of his life lived out in this unique little suburb hugging the shores of the Parramatta River.”
The property is for sale through agent Richard Mion at First National — Hunters Hill, Gladesville and Ryde.
