Shops bought by Kingston Council for the new station forecourt.

A new pedestrian gateway has been revealed as the latest piece in plans for the transformation of Cheltenham Station.
A pair of shops on Charman Rd has been bought by Kingston Council for $1.85 million and will make way for a large station forecourt dubbed “the front door into Cheltenham”.
The space will frame the station’s original heritage building, which will no longer be active after a new station replaces it next year.

The project is timed with level crossing removal works at Charman Rd and Park Rd, which are due to start before the end of the year.
Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said the council would create a “fantastic open space area” and “good pedestrian crossing” in front of the new station.
“We have used funding that has been set aside for new open spaces, which councils collect from developers when major new projects are built,” he said.
“We’re putting those funds to good use to ensure we make the most of this major infrastructure project.”

The open space will include palm trees, sitting areas, views to Cheltenham Park and art installations, according to an artist’s impression.
A pedestrian crossing on Charman Rd to the large pavilion will also make accessing the station safer.
The shops, home to a clothing retailer and ice cream store, were purchased at 245-247 Charman Rd by council during private negotiations on October 9.
They will be torn down to create the plaza.

Ray White Commercial’s Theo Karkanis said he felt bad for the owners of the ice cream business, who only began renting the shop at No. 247 this year.
But he said a number of changes would soon be seen in the area.
“Developments are about to pop up along Station St as well as Charman Rd, and there will be more high-density apartment living around,” he said.
“They already had a footpath to the station near here, but it was a little hidden and I expect this space will be much larger.”
The works are part of Kingston’s Cheltenham Structure Plan, which aims to build more green spaces connecting the train station with shopping precincts and Cheltenham Park. More carparking and retail developments are also planned for the precinct.
