This has been the reality for Karen and Reub Hayes and their tribe of three children and eight grandchildren at 266 Hudson Pde, Clareville a four-bedroom house on estate-like grounds with a $4.75 million to $5.2 million price guide. Cove House goes to auction on October 31 through LJ Hooker Avalon.
Granted there were not that many grandchildren when they bought the property known as Cove House, in 2000.
But the couple bought it with family in mind, initially as a weekender and holiday home, and eventually the place they would retire one day.
“We could see ourselves being there forever,” Mrs Hayes said.
“Even when we were old and didn’t want to climb the stairs we could live happily on the ground level and the top floor could be used for the family when they came to visit.”

But as they say, even the best-laid plans are made to be changed, and in recent years the couple and their family have found themselves using the property less and less.
With their children not dotted all over the world, they spend a lot of their time overseas or at the beach house in Port Douglas.
So the time has come to pass their beloved home on to the next family.
“It needs a family, that’s what we bought it for,” Mrs Hayes said. “It’s got to have somebody using it, somebody who will love it like we have.”

And there is a lot to love. The private, 1847sqm block borders a near-level waterfront reserve, and is located at the end of a private driveway, with estate-like grounds offering views across Pittwater.
