6 The Peak, Brinsmead

AGENT: Udo Jattke, RE/MAX Cairns

PRICE: $2 million

SOLD: February 1, 2019

Meticulous planning has paid off handsomely in this award-winning triumph that delivers resort-style luxury living with a knockout view, selling for $2 million in February.

Every inch of this 522sqm property has been meticulously planned and executed.

Take the four rhomboid, backlit floating stairs connecting two of its luxurious levels, for example.

The stunning feat of design took eight separate meetings with builders and electricians before previous owner Ross Britton got his way.

“This house is a testament to what can be done,” Mr Britton said.

“In terms of practicality, we wanted five bedrooms and really open, spacious living areas.

“We wanted, as you walked through the door, the wow factor not to be the house itself but the view.”

Its immaculately presented collection of stone, wood, steel and glass helped make it one of the winners of the Housing Industry Association’s Best Home in Cairns awards.

The airconditioned walk-in robe was designed for the lady of the house, complete with a mirror, drawers for hair straighteners and plenty of storage.

Mr Britton even requested louvres to be built into the north of the house to avoid stormy, wet weather, which usually comes from the south.

However, if heavy rain does comes from the north, a sensor has been programmed to close the windows as soon as it detects moisture.

Frameless 9m high glass doors mark the transition to the outdoors.

Mr Britton and his wife moved in to the five-bedroom home more than three years ago and after 30 years in business decided to pursue the free, nomadic life of retirees, so decided to sell.

“We do entertain a lot with a handful of friends and family.

“The deck next to the pool is a great spot to be.

“We could be having cheese and drinks, but it mostly ends up being a barbecue, because it’s just so easy,” he said.

“We’d cook and eat outdoors more than we did inside.

“We have a great Siemens teppanyaki plate, we do like the teppanyaki style of cooking.”

RE/MAX agent Udo Jattke agreed the outdoor dining experience was amazing and said the view across Cairns to the Coral Sea was stunning.

“By day or night, the heart of the home is the impressive alfresco area where you can relax on one of the day beds or eat and drink around one of the most amazing outdoor kitchens you will ever see,” Mr Jattke said.

“The sparkling infinity pool overlooking Cairns is also a drawcard.

“Throughout the home, the use of natural materials, including stone and recycled timber, which happens to be sourced from the old Carlton United Brewery in Brisbane, with a certificate of authenticity, adds to the warmth and wonderful ambience of this home.”

A fully integrated CBUS electronic system controls the entire home and it comes with a 12kW solar and security system.

57-59 Fig Tree Drive, Caravonica

AGENT: Tom Quaid, Quaid Real Estate

PRICE: $2.1 million

SOLD: June 25, 2018

This stunning hilltop residence set on more than 8000sqm sits in a private, elevated position with incredible views out to Green Island.

It was recorded as Caravonica’s highest home sale ever after selling for $2.1 million in June, 2018, after receiving a seven-figure renovation and extension in 2011.

The four-bedroom home includes five car spaces and three bathrooms and the interior is lined with marble flooring and full-height glass windows, ensuring every element of the home has been designed to provide a tasteful and practical platform for real-world use.

The open-plan property allows for unbeatable views of cane fields, mountains and the ocean, which can all be accessed from the comfort of the main living area that extends out to the horizon with floor-to-ceiling windows.

The master bedroom includes his and hers wardrobes, in addition to an ensuite built for two and big enough to rival the size of most bedrooms.

Three of the four bedrooms include ocean views and direct patio access.

The main bathroom is just as sumptuously appointed, with a large freestanding bath, walk-in shower and separate toilet, and a full-size laundry complete with access to in-ceiling storage.

The central kitchen comes fitted with a stone-topped island bench and soft close cabinetry, dual ovens, and plenty of storage, including a dumbwaiter lift.

Property agent Tom Quaid from Quaid Real Estate said the property was right to cater for any situation.

“All the foundations are there for separate living with a view,” Mr Quaid said.

“For those very special or intimate occasions, a purpose-built formal dining room is a rare find in this market but a lovely touch to see in this style of family home.

“Downstairs, an open-plan rumpus room can accommodate even the largest family gatherings, with a kitchenette, built-in bar and a bathroom.”

For its new owners, the office features its own entry and has been fully kitted out, however, it can be easily converted back to a bedroom when needed.

When play time is more appropriate, a full-size home theatre room includes everything you need, whether watching the game or playing it, with tiered leather recliners, a 90-inch projector screen, wired sound and new digital projector.

Complementing an already impressive feature set, the home also offers manicured grounds, in-ground pool with dual waterfalls, powered gazebo with bar, accommodation for five vehicles, detached workshop and even a 30kW generator.

5146 Captain Cook Highway Port Douglas

AGENT: Mark Flinn, Ray White Port Douglas

PRICE: $3 million

SOLD: November 7, 2018

A truly unique property set on a beachfront 1.8ha at Port Douglas with total privacy, sold for $3 million in November, 2018.

This beach house with two bedrooms and two bathrooms includes a master bedrooms featuring a private veranda and elevated ocean views.

The main house and pool is surrounded by extensive timber decking, ideal for relaxed tropical living and entertaining.

Ray White Port Douglas real estate agent Mark Flinn says the property is located perfectly to enjoy oceanic views, with only a short drive to town.

“There are amazing beach and Coral Sea views,” he said.

“Vibrant Port Douglas is just a 10 minute drive away and the award-winning Thala Beach Resort is an easy beach walk for luxury dining and day spa treatments.”

The property, which has been renovated multiple times but was originally built in the 1970s, includes an adjacent guest cabana with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and is framed by manicured lawns and lush tropical landscaping.

“The houses were basic beach houses with character and charm, so it was more about the location and land than the houses with this property,” Mr Flinn said.

There is also a full-sized floodlit tennis court and boat shed to house all the toys, plus a gym at the main house.

Mr Flinn says he rates this property as the greatest he’s ever sold.

“As far as beachfront properties go it is certainly the most spectacular,” he said.

“To have that much land in seclusion but so close to Port Douglas … it ranks it right up there.”

Before this property was sold, Mr Flinn said the original owners of the house, along with earlier tenants of the land, visited the house one last time.

“When we sold it at auction, we had one of the original owners and tenants come through; apparently a lot of hippies and free-spirited people lived on the site in the 1970s and 1980s in an old shack and also camped there,” he said.

According to Mr Flinn, the previous owners of this property travelled in a very unique way.

“They had a sea legs boat, which enabled them to drive from the house and in to the water, which is a pretty amazing thing to be able to do from your own property.”

AGENT: Callum Jones, The Pink Company

PRICE: $3.4 million

SOLD: September 10, 2018

This 10.74ha property located at the entrance to Port Douglas sold for $3.4 million in September, 2018.

The three-bedroom home features elevated timber verandas that surround the house, granting entry indoors and offering a perfect, shady retreat with both refreshing hill and sea breezes all-year round.

Each bedroom is paired with its own private bathroom and has direct access to the Queenslander-style verandas. The whole impressive property encompasses 797sqm under roof.

Callum Jones from The Pink Company said the rotunda-styled property showcased both old and new features.

“Vaulted ceilings and classic timber flooring blends with the latest lighting and technology, making the perfect marriage between old style and new,” he said.

“A remarkable home, one created with the charm of yesterday, constructed with the finest trades of today and with the view to tomorrow being a long enjoyable future.

“As soon as you proceed through the automatic security gates on entry, giving way to the majestic grounds and gardens, you get a real feeling of arriving home.

“Once indoors you will marvel at the open flow of living and dining and a reception room, which is the heart of the home and designed for both entertaining and family interaction.”

The lounge room features a cathedral ceiling, which promotes size and coolness, and Mr Jones said the television plays second fiddle when it comes to entertainment.

“It’s those glorious rural views through the large windows where native birds flock to the wetlands style dam … a favourite viewing spot for many twitchers and bird lovers.”

There is also an office to retreat to when work beckons, though this room could easily serve as a guest room should it be required.

A covered walkway accesses the triple car garage and there is ample visitor parking on offer.

Westward sunset views from the rotunda showcase the idyllic rainforested Port Douglas hinterland.

Eastward, the outlook extends over sweeping grounds with the centrepiece being the large dam, a haven for the local wetland birds. This property is truly the pinnacle of dream homes.
