Former North Melbourne footballer Lindsay Thomas’s hopes of kicking an auction goal have fallen short of the mark.

The retired goal sneak’s 45 Rutherglen Cres, Gowanbrae, house passed in under the hammer yesterday on a single $680,000 vendor bid.

But the three-bedroom house — Thomas’s home for most of his 11 seasons with the Roos — did attract some buyers willing to kick on after the auction.

AFL stars’ Melbourne property trades of 2018 — and those hoping to sell in 2019

The 30-year-old former footballer and wife Hannah bought the house in 2009 for $455,000, but moved back to their home city of Adelaide when Thomas signed on with Port Adelaide for a season.

The pair had listed the home with a $700,000-$770,000 asking price before auction

Ms Thomas previously told the Sunday Herald Sun moving on had been “bittersweet”.

While a sale hasn’t quite made it over the line yet, three prospective buyers were in talks with Alexkarbon director Charles Bongiovanni within a few minutes.

The home is now listed with a $735,000 asking price for private sale, with at least one offer made since auction below the desired sum.

Mr Bongiovanni said the 577sq m property’s big backyard, with space to kick the footy, and a well-maintained interior had lured the buyers — all of them young couples or a young family.

“Two were at the auction and we were speaking with them straight away,” he said.

“It’s not abnormal to have a home passed in and have people approach you after to negotiate the sale.”
