An elaborate Hawthorn tower residence built in the late 1800s by a renowned architect of the time has graced the market.
Part of what is know as the Glucksberg Trio, 9 Yarra St certainly makes a statement.
It was designed by John Beswicke, who was dubbed ‘Hawthorn’s architect’ and who created some of the area’s most famous mansions and public buildings, including the town hall.
Heritage records state Beswicke built three neighbouring tall garden villas that were similar but with different detailing.
“No. 9 is the most elaborate of the three,” the Victorian Heritage Database reads.
“It is executed in brown bricks with cream dressings … in addition it has; a prominent French renaissance tower roof with a tiny widows walk, elaborate picturesque brackets to a window hood on the first floor, a prominent rendered bay at ground floor level and intricate gable end detailing including cast iron panels.”
The property is listed as architecturally significant for its “exaggerated picturesque form to achieve (a) garden villa on narrow sites”.
“(It’s) historically significant for the illustration of the influence of building societies in the development of Hawthorn even during the 1890s depression.”
The five-bedroom house is on the market after being extensively restored and renovated over the past 13 years.
An arched hallway, marble fireplaces, stained glass windows that depict nearby river birdlife, the original staircase, ceiling roses and ornate cornices are some of the period highlights.
While a modern kitchen, media room, home office, contemporary bathrooms and a pool bring the house in-line with modern-day living.
It has a $5.25 million asking price.
Kay & Burton Armadale agent Michael Armstrong said the owner’s updates had perfectly blended the original period features of the home with contemporary elements.
“It’s in a popular part of Hawthorn, which is home to a high calibre of real estate,” he said.
“It’s a quality home, quality position and has everything going for it.
“When Beswicke designed the three houses, he apparently put the emphasis on No. 9 – it was the trophy of the three.
“We have had a lot of interest straight away and immediate attention from overseas with Australian expats in the US the main audience so far.”
