Holiday at home in a resort-style stunner

Written by The ReReport

IMAGINE sitting back with a glass of wine, watching the planes land at the airport and counting container ships off Adelaide’s picturesque coastline.

That’s what Deb Stemberger loves about the 3 Hillside Rd, Springfield, home she and her late husband Malcolm bought 25 years ago.

While the home had that view when they bought it, it didn’t have the entertainment elements the couple have added through a series of stunning renovations.

“It looked nothing like it does now – it had been vacant for 12 months, so it needed a lot of love and a renovation,” Mrs Stemberger says.

“We did the renovations in three different stages, and we lived here with a family of four while we did them, and we started in about 2006.

“We loved the location and it had a great aspect. The bones were very strong and we knew it was sound and it just needed a bit of love. It had already had a few large rooms added to it, so we didn’t actually increase the size of it, we just pulled it all together and made it work.

“It’s amazing both in winter and summer – Troppo Architects did a great job and it’s laid out in such a way that it captures as much light as possible.”

Mrs Stemberger says the home was of quality construction and built to stand the test of time.

“It’s all double brick and the second storey has a cement floor,” she says.

“It’s rock solid, has no cracks and has a beautiful view – I’m watching the container ships out on the ocean now and I can see the planes landing at the airport without hearing them. It’s just such a beautiful place.”

The three-level home has two bedrooms on the ground floor, laid out in a way that makes accommodating guests a breeze, Mrs Stemberger says.

“My mother lives in New Zealand and she’s 90, and she can come and stay with me easily and doesn’t have to navigate the stairs,” she says. “The other two bedrooms, a living room and a bathroom are upstairs, and that gave my kids their own space, so it worked really well for that.”

The heart of the home is the ground floor, which features an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area – the kitchen complete with Gaggenau and Miele appliances – opening to a large covered terrace overlooking a sparkling inground pool. It also opens to a second sunken living and dining area with a gas fireplace, meaning the home has more than enough space for a large gathering.

“It’s brilliant for entertaining and has everything you need – a strong workable kitchen, a great decked outdoor entertaining area with a barbecue that’s covered so it can really handle a large capacity of people year-round,” Mrs Stemberger says.

“We’ve had two children while we’ve been here, so we’ve had 16ths, 18ths, 21sts, and I’ve also got two stepchildren so we had their birthdays here as well, and lots of New Year’s Eve parties – it’s been quite a sociable home over the years.

“The pool is fantastic and the kitchen looks over it, so it’s very safe. It’s been a massive transformation and I’ve got a lot of wonderful memories here. It really is a home, it’s not a house. It’s just a beautiful place to be and a relaxing place to come back to after work.”

The home has several outdoor entertainment spaces and is surrounded by established landscaped gardens. Underneath the home are several storage areas, a cellar, a porch and a carport with space for four cars.

Mrs Stemberger says her Hillside Rd resort is a family home and deserves to be loved by another family.

“I’m the only one here now and it’s too big for just one person,” she says. “It would be fantastic if it could go to another loving family who could grow up here.

“I’ve been here for 25 years and I still love living in this house.”
