The last freestanding house on Manly’s harbourfront has come to market with point blank views from Manly Wharf to the eastern suburbs.

Known as the tall white house, number 89 West Esplanade, is a tri-level home with rooftop terrace, garage and two car spaces across the road from the former Manly aquarium.

Most of the harbourside foreshore of Manly is made up of unit blocks, retail, hotels and bars. The tall white house is the last house and it has a lovely love story embedded in its past as well as four bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living rooms and a northerly courtyard.

Its late owners, Denis and Nora Grassi, met on board a ship migrating from Italy and having met on water they promised each other they would one day live by the water.

As young “New Australians” they originally lived south of the harbour bridge and would catch the ferry to Manly for an ice cream on the beach, talking about where their dream house would be.

The house in West Esplanade Manly fulfilled that dream when they retired there in the 1990s, rebuilding the home to capture magical views of little Manly and the expanse of Sydney Harbour to Vaucluse.

The family could watch the ferry come from the house and stroll down to catch it with time to spare.

The rooftop terrace was the favoured spot for watching fireworks at New Year and family and friends would slip across the road for an early morning swim at Many Cove.

Manly houses are hugely popular but also relatively rare. According to CoreLogic only 65 houses sold in Manly over 12 months outnumbered by more than three times by the number of units that sold in the beach suburb. The median price for a house in Manly is $2.85 million and the median unit price is $1,257,500.

Eddy Piddington, of Stone Real Estate, said the contemporary home on West Esplanade was the last of its kind on the iconic strip and it goes to auction on Saturday December 7 with a guide of $4 million.

There are open living spaces on both floors, an open-plan kitchen and sleek bathrooms that include a spa. The bedrooms have built-ins and the main bedroom has its own bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe.

The terrace on the roof is a feature but there ire also two full-width balconies and a north courtyard. Extras include airconditioning, a wet bar, security alarm and a basement rumpus or games room with its own bathroom.

This property combines style with position and is in a coveted spot opposite the Manly art gallery and harbour foreshore walkway.
