A contemporary transformation to a Manifold Heights house has paid off handsomely, earning the sellers close to $1.2 million.

A big crowd braved cold wind and rain to watch five bidders contest the four-bedroom house at 273 Autumn St at Saturday’s auction.

It sold under the hammer for $1.199 million to a Drumcondra family who are now preparing to relocate to a bigger house, with a pool.

Bidding opened at $1 million for the character home that last traded, unrenovated in 2015 for $392,000.

The price quickly passed $1.1 million, with four in the race.

As the price reached $1.16 million, one buyer asked whether the property had reached the reserve.

“We are on the market,” McGrath, Geelong auctioneer David Cortous confirmed.

Bidding continued at $5000, $2500 and $1000 increments before the one bidder remained, forced to wait a few more seconds while the underbidder sought instructions on the phone.

The additional suspense was almost too much for Geelong buyers Steven and Tina Ristevksi.

“We’re moving down from Drumcondra because we’ve decided we need a bigger family home.

“We have two kids, they’ll live the pool. We’re quite excited about it,” he said.

Listing agent Jim Cross said the quality property drew a lot of interest, with two more buyers keeping their hands in their pocket.

“To have 120 to 130 people on a day like this with the rain and wind is just a testament to the quality of the property,” Mr Cross said.

“It pretty much rolled out how we expected it to.

“The buyers have got themselves a pretty good property and the vendors have got a great result,” he said.

The renovation and extension has transformed the character home to an as-new family residence.

As well as being the perfect place to entertain, this sophisticated home focuses on the extras that make life just a little bit better, like commercial grade windows, a cutting-edge kitchen with sensor lights, a 900mm induction cooktop with a retractable downdraft rangehood and ducted heating and cooling.
