Model and reality TV star Rhys Uhlich is on a mission to make sustainable housing fashionable through his latest project on Phillip Island.
The 2008 winner of Channel 7’s Make Me a Supermodel is building a family home from shipping containers on a $120,000 budget.
Uhlich and his family started the mammoth task after moving back to Australia from LA last year. His wife, Claire, and daughters, Indah and Mahli, will live at the house while he continues to work between America and Australia.
Since winning a modelling contract in 2008, Uhlich has been a reporter on The Circle, panellist on Talking ‘Bout Your Generation and appeared in the cast of Neighbours.
He has also started writing and producing film and TV in California.
Uhlich said he was working with Phillip Island-based draftsman Sharyn Blakemore on the passion project.
“Our home is being made of two shipping containers and a shed,” Uhlich said.
“From there, we plan to take our time and enjoy the creative process of fitting out our home with recycled materials and making our build a unique work of art that matches our life.”
The container is being built on land owned by Uhlich’s family. He’s using his Instagram to share the project’s progress.
