Shahen and Sonya Mekertichian at the Oscars have just bought in Queenscliff.

The film producer behind the award-winning movie Lion, Shahen Mekertichian, is the new owner of Queenscliff’s most expensive apartment.

The former investment banker and his wife Sonya have paid $6.1 million for the penthouse of the newly-built Aquilam development in Pavilion St.

The couple had been living in Manly’s Bower St but were impressed with the Aquilam security block and its big ocean views. They signed on the dotted line on Tuesday of this week.

Anthony Calacoci, of Belle Property Manly, said the three-bedroom apartment sold for just under $40,000 per square metre which is a record for Queenscliff. It is also the top price for a unit in the suburb and the third highest price for the suburb behind a beachfront house in Crown Rd which sold for $10 million in 2017 and an architectural masterpiece house in Highview Ave which sold for $7.55 million earlier this year.

Mr Calacoci said the Mekertichians loved the views and the quality of the development and the fact that nothing like this will be built again on Queenscliff headland. One apartment in the six-unit block remains for sale with a guide of $5.4 million. It occupies the entire floor, 172sqm of accommodation, and has a northeast facing terrace, floor to ceiling glass, elevator entry, a marble kitchen and parking for two cars.

Lion has swept the board at an Aussie movie ceremony. The tear-jerker, starting Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, won all 12 of the awards it was nominated for at the Australian Academy of Cinema, Television and Arts Awards in Sydney, including best film..

The movie Lion was nominated for Oscars in 2017 for best supporting actor and best adapted screenplay.

The film told the true story of a lost Indian street child adopted by Australians who located his birth mother via Google maps.

It starred Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel and was produced by Sunstar Entertainment based in Brookvale.
