open house a perfect family fit

23 Elston Ave, Denistone: the rear of the house flows to the outdoors.

What do you get when you pair a perfectionist with someone who confesses to being a stickler for order?
The answer can be found at 23 Elston Ave, Denistone, an exceptional property that has been buffed and polished to perfection by owners Anita and Rick Le Lay.
Mrs Le Lay is the neat freak and her husband, a skilled cabinet-maker, likes everything to be — well, just so.
The couple bought their period house in 2002, drawn to its serene cul-de-sac position on 1043sq m.

The previous owners had done a wonderful job maintaining its character, present in high ornate ceilings and timber floors, but the Le Lays saw an opportunity to extend and open the rear of the house to the serene bushland at the edge of their rambling backyard.
They wanted to create indoor and outdoor zones for their three young children.
To that end, they embarked upon a renovation journey that involved the creation of two extra bedrooms to take the number to five, a new ensuite, “and a raft of living areas”.

23 Elston Ave, Denistone, has a covered deck and a built-in second kitchen.

The realisation of their dream is visible from the backyard, looking to the rear of the house, which can be totally opened to the elements, drawing the family outside at every opportunity.
The Le Lays spend a lot of their time on the back deck which has a second built-in kitchen.
Mr Le Lay is responsible for every bespoke finish which includes a built-in entertainment unit, study nook and kitchen that is the hub of the house.
“He is a bit fussy, all of the appliances had to be Bosch and the stone is 40mm. Everything is quality,” Mrs Le Lay said.

A custom-built kitchen with Bosch appliances has room for at least five seated at the floating kitchen bench.

The floorplan has four of five bedrooms on the ground floor.
The main is a dream — it has a full ensuite, walk-in wardrobes and two walls of glass doors that can be opened to a verdant backdrop.
The potential for self-contained living is evident on the lower ground floor that contains a fifth bedroom with ensuite, rumpus and laundry. It also has a covered deck.
The Le Lays’ attention to detail can be also be seen in the inground pool finished in green-tones to blend in with the natural environment.
The five-bedroom three-bathroom house is for sale through Liz Wiggins and Justin Keenan at WigginsKeenan.
