A BALINESE-inspired beach house built using recycled timber has added another accolade to its impressive award history.
Images of Spice at Oak Beach near Port Douglas were rated Cairns most popular in the bathroom, kitchen, wardrobe, entry, landscape and patio categories in the annual Best of Houzz award.
In the bathroom category, 36-38 The Peak, Brinsmead was also recognised for its breathtaking design.
Houzz is a leading online platform for home renovation and design.
Spice is a large L-shaped, two-storey home with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a pool and an entertaining area.
The term ’tropical bohemian’ was given to the home’s particular style, which helped in establishing a design palette to work with.
Balay Van Dyke project manager Sean Reason, part of the team who spent six months designing the home, said the process took nine different concept designs.
The home was named best individual home at the master builders award in 2017, won the state award for best residential project at last year Building Designers Association of Queensland awards and from that, went onto to the national awards category where it picked up a gong for best use of timber.
“This particular job, and the way the clients wanted to approach it was unique — they didn’t really know how to explain their requirement, they just knew how they wanted it to feel and they wanted it to be like it had been there for a long time,” Mr Reason said.
“Builder Nathan Verri won the tender and I think the way the materials all came together was the most pleasing part of the project.
“The client decided to use recycled timber and it added to the age and character and charm of the house.
“The way the kitchen benchtops and the vanity was cast in concrete, they give it a nice weight and age and feel as well.”
The client’s passion for hand crafted finishings led them to source the various decor from overseas trips as well.
The L-shaped layout of the home wraps around a private courtyard and pool area and the bi-folding timber doors open the main living areas out to both the beach and the courtyard.
“Best of Houzz is a true badge of honour as it is awarded by our community of homeowners, those who are hiring design, renovating and other home improvement professionals for their projects,” said Tony Been, Asia-Pacific country manager of Houzz.
“We are excited to celebrate the 2019 winners chosen by our community as their favourites for home design and customer experience, and to highlight those winners on the Houzz website and app.”
