Looking for a luxurious home on a fantastic equestrian property within 30 minutes of the city? That’s what Tom Newland has at the Johnsons Rd Balhannah property he bought in 1984.
“We’d been living in South Africa for a number of years on a big petrochemical project and we came back to make a new life in Australia,” he says.
“I’d grown up in the country and my wife enjoyed horses so the opportunity to have a rural lifestyle close to the city was great.
“The location is excellent – now there’s nearby transport to take you to Adelaide and I can be at my office in the city within 30 minutes. There are people in the suburbs who can’t even do that.”
The home is set over two levels and has six bedrooms, three bathrooms, numerous formal and informal living spaces and a covered inground pool and spa.
“It’s a bit of a landmark up here – people often admire it,” Mr Newland says.
“It was built by old Bill Johnson whose family go back to the original days of Johnsons Rd. We later enlarged it by putting rooms up in the roof, with design input by Pauline Hurren.
“It was great for our family because the kids could be upstairs and each have a bedroom up there, and we could do our own thing downstairs. It’s been a great party house and we’ve done a lot of entertaining here over the years.”
The home is set on an 8.09ha allotment and has a large equestrian facility comprising a 60m x 20m indoor riding arena, five stables, five workshops and five storage bays.
“It would be perfect for a family who could grow up here and love the lifestyle it offers,” Mr Newland says. “With me being the only one here now, it’s time for someone else to enjoy it.”
