Wealthy pub baron Phillip De Angelis has been sentenced to a year’s home detention — but this $4.1 million luxury apartment isn’t a bad place to be doing time.
It’s in Cadigal, where former model Lara Bingle was said to have thrown a 4.7 carat diamond ring down the toilet before she split up with Michael Clarke.
The former Australian cricket captain still owns the three-bedroom apartment he bought in Cadigal for about $6 million and rents it out for $3,750 a week. Clarke and his wife Kyly now live in the Vaucluse home they bought for $8.5 million in 2014.
De Angelis has appealed against the home detention sentence for bashing his girlfriend, high-profile interior decorator Nellie Tilley — but Cadigal is nothing like the humble Bondi Diggers club that used to be on the site.
In fact it’s such a treasured address that few of the original purchasers, who bought off the plan in 2005 when Redwood Developments and multi-award-winning architect William Smart built the smart five-level complex with dream views, have traded.
Hotel owner Greg Magree, who was behind the rebirth of The Carrington in Surry Hills and The Norfolk in Redfern, is one to cash in, selling the two-bedder on an upper floor that he’d bought for $1,050,000 for $1.83 million in 2012.
De Angelis, who was appointed a director to the family’s DHI Hotels Group in 2015, bought his apartment with three “kingsize” bedrooms and two marble bathrooms with heated floors in 2016 for $4.1 million.
The 38-year-old pleaded guilty to five domestic violence charges involving his former partner, the interior decorator Nellie Tilley, 53, in 2016. She was once married to the wealthy hotelier Simon Tilley, brother of James Packer’s close friend Ben Tilley.
Among his admissions were bashing her bathroom door down after she saw a video on his phone of him having sex with another woman and throwing a lighter at her head which caused a deep gash on her head that has left a lasting scar.
Yesterday, along with the home detention where he would have to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and abstain from drugs, magistrate Philip Stewart sentenced De Angelis to 300 hours of community service and a two-year community corrections order.
After an appeal from his legal team, Mr Stewart granted de Angelis bail ahead of the appeal hearing in March, which means he won’t have to start his home detention sentence at this stage.
When the apartment was marketed two years ago, the ad specified the apartment offered “lockup-and-go convenience”.
When he moved in, De Angelis could never have imagined that he could one day face simply the “lockup” part of that.
But still, there’s a huge-open-plan living and dining area flowing to an alfresco terrace where he could enjoy a barbecue overlooking the beach.
There are luxurious Calacatta marble floors, a conservatory-style indoor-outdoor living room adjoining all three bedrooms.
And a Caesarstone Miele gas deluxe kitchen with filtered water and soft-close drawers.
The ducted aircon would also ensure staying cool in summer and cosy during the Bondi winter.
There’s also back-to-base security, so little chance of a break-in.
