Here’s your chance to own a slice of SA history as Stirling’s iconic Kincraig hits the market for the first time in more than 30 years.
John and Lyn McDonald have, in recent years, restored the 1915-built home to its former glory and Mr McDonald says their association with the property goes back three decades.
“We’ve had an affiliation with the property for more than 30 years because we knew the previous owner, and we actually got married here more than 20 years ago and have had anniversary parties and everything here since then,” Mr McDonald says.
“We always wanted to own it – they are quite rare and unique, these sorts of properties, and they don’t come on the market all that often. It’s basically an Old English style home built in 1915 and was originally a summer house, we believe, for Priscilla Bickford.”
The two-storey gentleman’s residence has five bedrooms, a gym or sunroom, a billiard room, an office, several balconies, a cellar and a separate coach house with a loft and a range of storage spaces. Mr McDonald says the couple have renovated the home throughout, remaining true to its original identity, but also bringing it into the modern era.
“We’ve totally restored the home to its former glory, sparing no expense but still being sympathetic to the era with which it was built,” Mr McDonald says.
“We’ve opened up the area at the back so it’s traditional at the front and open at the back.
“We did a lot of research when we did it to make sure we didn’t cross styles or anything like that and made sure anything that needed replacing was done in exactly the form in which it was originally done.
“It’s got a lot of oak inside and teak floorboards upstairs which had never been polished before, so they’ve come up an absolute treat.
“Downstairs is one of Adelaide’s first terrazzo floors, because terrazzo didn’t come in until about the 50s, so this was almost the first trial of terrazzo. Everything we’ve done is quality – what you see and what you don’t see with the rewiring and the plumbing – it’s important to make sure it’s done the way it should be done.”
Mr McDonald says, with an abundance of different indoor and outdoor living areas, the possibilities for entertaining are endless.
“We’ve entertained quite a bit up here,” he says. “The coach house, which was built prior to 1915 – we’ve accommodated 40 people in there for a barn dance with outside firepits going. Then there’s the formal dining room for formal dinner parties, and we’ve spent many nights around the bar overlooking the full-size snooker table. It’s a perfect entertainer’s property as well as being a great family home.
“There are five bedrooms so it would suit a family or an extended family, and it does have a lift, which is the original 1915 lift which has been fully recommissioned, so age is really no barrier in this house.”
The home is surrounded by a landscaped garden, with established rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias providing bursts of colour amid the greenery. As amazing as the home is, Mr McDonald says it’s location is a huge selling point.
“It’s within walking distance of the heart of Stirling,” he says. “I walk in there every day to go to the gym or to get coffee. We have friends that come up and there are nearby walking trails which we go on, and we generally end up somewhere for brunch because there are a lot of cafes and restaurants around.”
Mr McDonald says the couple are proud of what they’ve done to the home and are happy they have been able to preserve a piece of SA history for the next generation.
“A lot of the tradespeople who have come to work on the property have been just in awe of the original architecture and craftsmanship, and the people we engaged to bring it back to the way we want it to be,” Mr McDonald says.
“We really feel like custodians of a piece of South Australian history and it will be sad to say goodbye to it, but we feel it’s time for us to move on. We’ve restored it to its former glory and enjoyed it, and now it’s time for someone else to enjoy it as well.”
