THERE’S $45k off reserves up for grabs on the last The Block reveals before auction day and one team receives some harsh feedback.
We’re shown plenty of feel-good family moments as the teams scramble to finish, but when the judges arrive things get real.
First-place will receive $20k off their reserve, second scores a $15k reduction and third scores $10k off their auction reserve.
Here’s how things panned out:
COURTNEY AND HANS
Room: The kitchen
Confidence: Won $20k off their reserve last week
The judges thought the kitchen was right on brief and said they felt right at home in the St Kilda room. The neon 3182 sign was a clever nod to the suburb and the first thing Shaynna said was “this is amazing” Neale wasn’t sure if he was in a St Kilda cafe or a kitchen but either way he thought it was “sensational”. But Darren said it best: “WTF! This is hot!” They loved the Caeserstone benchtop and splashback. The word “sensual” was thrown around a lot. And there was a lot of touching of things. Neale said he had “extreme kitchen envy” and Shaynna said it was “precision styling”
SARA AND HAYDEN
Rooms: Hallway and pretty much all the rest
Confidence: More yelling than usual
The first thing that Shaynna noticed was the feature artwork and she said she loved it; “how funky is this?” Neale described it as “really simple but really bold.” Darren thought that it was a total return to form for Hayden and Sara. And then they griped about painting and execution for a while. They all went creepily fan-girl over the laundry. Darren said “I want it” and the others oohed and aahed. Neale said the study was a “great space” and Darren said “I’m in love with that track” about the sliding doors to that space.
NORM AND JESS
The dining room.
Room: Dining room
Confidence: “It’s all good”
Neale loved the “It’s all good” neon sign and Darren thought the “lighting schedule” in general was spot on. The Christian Cole dining table won them some points and Shaynna said it was “stunning”. Darren just loved that it’s round. They (quite rightly) lost points for having a picture of Shelley Craft. Overall, the judges think Norm and Jess delivered a very strong room and a very appropriate dining room for the apartment everyone has been working to create.
BIANCA AND CARLA
Room: Living room
Shaynna hated the space and asked “what were you doing?” and Neale said he sees “panic here”. Darren described the space as “playful and quirky” but also as having a look of “low cost”. Neale went one further: “it feels cheap”. Shaynna said: “I think it is them at their worst.” There was some weird chatter about a “dead clown” on the couch. Apparently that’s not an “in” look. Shaynna said she thought Bianca and Carla must have drawn the short straw on the budget. She then delivered the ultimate burner — comparing them to rivals Hayden and Sara. She said she thought the netballers had checked out of The Block a week ago.
KERRIE AND SPENCE
These guys had the benefit of coming after Carla and Bianca’s room in judging, and the number of “wows” thrown around was certainly high. “This is the loungeroom this apartment needs” Darren said. For a moment — when Shaynna started singing — we thought we’d accidentally started watching X Factor or the Voice. But Delta didn’t arrive to mention journey, laneway or connection, so we returned to judging the terrace. “This is what life at The Gatwick should be about” Neale said.
So, who scored what?
Bianca and Carla came last with 21.5. Norm and Jess finished ahead of them, with 26.5.
Hayden and Sara smugly clocked 27 for $10k off the reserve.
And, Kerrie and Spence finished second with 28.5 — for a $15k rebate.
Courtney and Hans won the day, with 29 points and scored another $20k off their reserve.
Total moneys off reserve.
