Unley Park’s house of teddies a treasure for young and old

Written by The ReReport

If teddy bears could talk, Claire Edwards toy collection would have plenty to say.

The bears take pride of place in almost every corner of Mrs Edwards’ Unley Park home and the collector and toy-maker said they had been part of her life for as long as she could remember.

“My love of bears goes right back to my childhood. I was born at the end of World War II and a lot of toys were unavailable,” she said.

“So my first bear was made of patchwork quilt with skinny arms.

“When I was about five years old, I saved up some money and bought a yellow fur bear which started my love and collection of teddy bears.

“Today, I have around 200 bears, around half of which I’ve made myself.”

Due to personal circumstances, Mrs Edwards is now looking to “re-home” a large portion of her collection, as well as say goodbye to her treasured family home of more than 50 years — the birth place of some 100, handmade teddy bears.

The property at 8 Omar Place, meanwhile, is for sale through Belle Property with a price guide of $900,000 to $990,000.

It is set on a 371sqm block and features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a good-sized lounge and a combined kitchen/meals area.

Character features also abound and include floorboards, high ceilings, open fireplaces and vintage wallpaper.

Mrs Edwards said she was sad to leave but it was time to move on.

“We loved living here and raised both of our daughters here,” she said.

“My grandkids also enjoy coming over and they especially enjoy my special bear room.

“We even had some fights over who would sleep in that room and would have to flip a coin.”

Selling agent John McRostie said he expected a good turnout at the home’s first public viewing this Saturday, at 3.45pm.

“I think it’s going to be an interesting one as there are not only teddies but Persian cats,” he said.

“We already had some early interest but I think this weekend will be a true test on how popular this home is going to be.

“Personally I think it’s an affordable property in a prestigious suburb in a gorgeous street.

“It’s got a lot of charm and character, sits on a small allotment and is just waiting for someone wanting to make it their own.”

The teddy bears are not included in the sale of the house; however, Mrs Edwards said she would hold a public “adoption program” prior to handing over the keys.
